TNT streamlines billing with Navision Financials

Johannesburg, 13 Nov 1998

TNT's international mail division has installed Navision Financials to handle its rating and billing worldwide. Purchased through Navision Solution Centre, Cambridge Online Systems, the software replaces TNT's mainframe invoicing system that was not year 2000-compliant.

TNT is part of the TNT Post Group (TPG), a Dutch multinational operating company listed on several stock exchanges. The company has a leading position in the worldwide express, logistics and mail business, combined with a full range of mail and innovative value-added services.

Because of the time factor in implementing a year 2000-compliant solution, TNT decided to look for packaged system rather than developing one in-house.

Joost Boerboom, IS Contract Manager, Finance and Administration at TNT says: "We selected Navision Financials because it came closest to our needs, was cost-effective and could be customised by Cambridge Online to provide us with a solution for our complicated pricing mechanism. This includes number of items, weight, discounts, priority delivery and surcharges in relation to custom duties.

"We have four regional centres worldwide, namely Duiven in The Netherlands and London for Europe, New York for The Americas and Singapore for the Asian Pacific region, and we have network links to all these from our IT head office in Atherston, near Birmingham. We went live on schedule in The Netherlands in May, five months after commencing the project. London, New York and Singapore went live between September and November.

"Compared to the mainframe systems previously used, we like the look and feel of the Navision system and find it easy to use."

TNT uses Navision Financials Sales & Receivables application, which has been customised for rating and billing functions, and it is linked to its worldwide mainframe system, thus eliminating having to re-enter information.

The benefits, according to Ute Messing, TNT's Administration Manager, are "flexibility of the rating structures, particularly in relation to items and weights, which are important for an international mail company. Its extra functionality enables us to automatically calculate the prices of items, which is a big improvement over our previous manual rating procedures. In addition, invoice production is very fast and it provides us with instant access to information that is always fully up-to-date."

Cambridge Online has also been involved in the conversion from TNT's old system at the various sites and will be upgrading TNT with the euro version of Navision Financials in November."
