To VC or not to VC? That is the question...

Video conferencing is arguably a perfect technology; it saves money, time and energy costs, yet it seems many employees are still racking up frequent flyer miles or spending a large amount of time behind a steering wheel, says Jenny Bondi, Customer Relations Manager at Bridge Conferencing Solutions.

The modern workforce is becoming increasingly mobile and teams are often made up of individuals in different cities and even different countries and time zones. To match this trend, video conferencing capabilities are built into virtually every new PC, tablet or mobile device that is introduced to the market. With all this technology available, it is still seldom that a company embraces video conferencing fully. Why could this be?

There are five key factors that could influence the uptake of video conferencing within an organisation:

1. Interoperability: If someone is forced to use a specific type of device, it may decrease the likelihood of adoption of the technology. If an application can be run on multiple devices and can also interoperate with boardroom systems, it is more likely the technology will be used.

2. Infrastructure: The infrastructure required to run multi-party video conferencing is often considered a luxury and not a core business need. Often, businesses will not purchase hardware, thus reducing uptake.

3. Ease of use: If a technology is difficult to use, then the adoption will be significantly slowed.

4. Cost: Many companies will not invest in video conferencing if it is far more expensive to run than their current audio conferencing.

5. Security: Many people feel that seeing someone face-to-face is more secure than having a video meeting over the Internet.

At Bridge Conferencing Solutions, we offer a hosted multipoint video conferencing service that overcomes all these hurdles - the Avaya Radvision Scopia Desktop and Mobile. In terms of interoperability, the Scopia Desktop application offered runs on PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads and Android mobile devices. The Scopia Desktop client can also connect to 'traditional' boardroom systems. The infrastructure issue is taken care of, as this is a cloud-based solution, hosted on the IS backbone. The software is extremely easy to install and operate and there is no cost to download this software from the Bridge Conferencing Solutions server. The only cost is for the time you are connected to the server in a video call. Finally, security is taken care of by means of a 128-bit AES encryption option.
