Top honours for Foster-Melliar student

Johannesburg, 26 Jan 2006

Foster-Melliar, specialist in IT service management and ITIL, has for nine consecutive years boasted the top student in IT service management training. Now one of Foster-Melliar`s latest graduates, Debra Ialomov, Head Office Support Manager at FoschiniDATA, has achieved a double distinction for the Manager`s Certificate in IT Service Management, a Foster-Melliar course accredited by the Information Systems Examination Board (ISEB).

"The Manager`s Certificate in IT Service Management is an exceptionally advanced training programme and worldwide only enjoys a 50% pass rate. A double distinction on both modules of the course is an exceptional achievement. The Manager`s Certificate in IT Service Management is structured to provide learners with the theory of IT service management and the know-how to implement this best practice across service support and service delivery," says Derrick Plank of Foster-Melliar.

Upon receiving some advice from Plank, Ialomov says she focused on studying according to the different areas in the study material, thoroughly covering the 11 processes in each area.

"A lot of the information overlaps," says Ialomov. "It makes it easier to retain the information by simply focusing on the various areas instead of increasing the volume of study material by learning the same thing over and over again. This method ensured that I paid an equal amount of attention to each area of study," Ialomov adds.

"I started my exam preparations a month prior to the event, and realised that it was easier to answer a question by creating tables and other word structures. This helped me to keep my answers focused and logical and my work `tidy`," says Ialomov, as a word of advice to fellow students.

"If the question required me to list the advantages and disadvantages of a certain aspect, I would split the page into two columns and then list each set of answers accordingly," explains Ialomov.

Upon receiving her results, Ialomov was totally overwhelmed by a strong sense of pride and at the same time also very relieved that she did not have to complete another gruelling exam session.

Asked what she was planning for the future, she said: "I am currently working on a project at FoschiniDATA that is focused on the alignment of processes within the ITIL framework. This course could not have presented itself at a more opportune moment, arming me with a vital understanding of the practical aspects of implementing ITIL processes," says Ialomov.

"I would not recommend any student to study the night before an exam, as you will need all your strength to help you through the exam," warns Ialomov. "Having your full mental capacity at your disposal is more important than that last bit of theory."
