Top TV scoops awards

Despite a short six-month existence in the broadcasting industry and limited outlets, pay TV newcomer Top TV has eight Promax BDA Africa Awards, including Channel Brand of the Year.

The Promax BDA Africa Awards recognises excellence for TV design, on-air imagery and promo production; the event is in its fifth year in SA. The company has been awarded five gold awards and three silvers.

Top TV seems to be honing in on every opportunity to succeed, as it continues unrivalled, with the failure of Super5Media to enter the market. Super5Media hoped to bring its own offering to South Africans soon after the release of Top TV earlier this year.

However, the company applied to the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) for an extension to go live in September, but missed the deadline. ICASA extended the deadline again last month, for another six months.

The idea to license the two new broadcasters was to maintain a competitive environment, and not allow the pay TV space to be dominated by a single player, the authority explained at the time of licensing.

However, Super5Media has had a troubled start to life, with and shareholder problems holding back its initial plans to bring a new service to local TV viewers.

Speculation of shareholder troubles between its majority shareholder, Shenzhen Media, and the minority stakeholders, may also be keeping it from bringing a new service to market. The company has repeatedly been unavailable for comment.
