Subscription television service TopTV will increase prices across most of its bouquets from the beginning of next month.
The broadcaster says the increase is an “inflationary adjustment, which any business faces when dealing with rising operational costs” such as cost of content. “Considering that we have now been operational for 13 months, we have managed to keep off this adjustment into our 14th month.”
All of its packages, apart from the entry-level R99 variety package have been increased by between R10 and R20 more a month.
TopTV launched last May, sparking a mini price war as MultiChoice responded by launching its own R99 entry-level bouquet. On the day of its launch, 50 000 decoders flew out of shops, leaving the company scrambling to bring in additional stock to serve the market.
In a statement issued in May, the company said it had its share of teething problems. “However, its launch in May last year saw a shakeup in the pay-TV market with prices been lowered, new software been introduced, as well as a previously ignored market being catered to with specific channels.”
TopTV has grabbed the rights to first runs of some international shows, including “The Walking Dead”, “The Listener” and “Falling Skies”. “The Booth at The End”, also exclusive to TopTV, was a first in terms of incorporating online, mobile and TV, it said.
“As a young company, TopTV is aware of its current challenges, but also very proud of its achievements to date,” said Elouise Kelly, VP of marketing.
