Toshiba enters tablet race

The Folio 100, Toshiba's entry into the tablet race at the Internationale Funkaustellung (IFA) trade show in Berlin, comes with Android version 2.2 like the competition, but the company has opted for a larger 10.1-inch touch-screen, says PC World.

The larger screen comes at a cost - the Folio 100 weighs 760g, compared to the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which has a seven-inch screen and weighs 380g.

It will be up to consumers to choose between screen size and portability.

Samsung eyes top laptop spot

Samsung aims to secure the number-one laptop vendor ranking, having risen near to the top of other electronics categories, writes Reseller News.

The lofty goal follows the local debut of five portable PC models - three notebooks and two netbooks.

They range from the flagship premium 13-inch Q330 model at the higher end of the market to the N150+ netbook.

PC purchases to slow

IDC analysts predict consumer PC sales will slow in the second half of 2010 after a strong first two quarters, eWeek notes

However, the company points out that the softening in the PC market in the second half was not unexpected, and that a large number of sizable corporate IT projects worldwide had helped to bolster overall PC sales beyond expectations.

Still, because of concerns about the struggling economy and other factors, IDC reduced its overall 2010 PC shipment forecast from 19.8% to 17% over 2009 figures.
