Toshiba has opened a sales and support office in Nigeria, as part of its plan to expand into Africa. Emmanuel Olusegun Sokunbi, Toshiba's business development manager, will head up the office.
"The office will provide support and marketing services to the company's channel partners in Nigeria, as well as several surrounding countries, including Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia," says Reon Coetzee, marketing manager for Toshiba SA and Africa.
Africa, with the exception of SA, is a comparatively new market for Toshiba, he says. "To this extent we are focusing a lot of our strength in establishing distribution channels in this new region and have subsequently appointed Technology Distributions Limited, which also has offices in Ghana, as our service partner for the region."
Sokunbi says there are few options available to businesses as well as consumers in Africa, and the presence of an established global brand will boost healthy competition in the market, by offering a wider variety as well as bringing prices down.
He says, as the Nigerian market is not confident of adequate after-sales support, a modern service centre has been built in conjunction with TD Africa.
Plans are in the final stages for Toshiba's East African office, which aims to be operational in the second half of this year, adds Sokunbi.
