Toshiba has released two new products - a laptop that can simultaneously display 2D and 3D graphics, and a tablet computer.
Steven Ambrose, MD of Strategy Worx, believes the glasses-free 3D laptop, called Qosmio F750 3D, will penetrate the gaming market as well as other areas like medical imaging and engineering design.
“The glasses-free laptop is an impressive example of innovation.”
He explains that having the capacity to display 2D and 3D at the same time is unique, and sets this device apart from its competitors.
“The active tracking of eyes to avoid blind spots in the 3D image is also very impressive,” Ambrose adds. “Overall, the unit is a tour de force of cutting-edge technology, and should find a unique place in the market.”
According to Toshiba, the laptop is the first commercially available “glasses-free 3D laptop” that displays 2D and 3D images simultaneously on one screen. The company says the laptop opens up opportunities for architects, scientists, product designers and doctors.
Ambrose says the Toshiba AT100 tablet has decent specs, and is well priced for the South African market. Toshiba's advantage with this tablet is that it is one of the best-made Android tablets, he adds. “It may enjoy moderate success and may find a niche in this heavily-traded market.”
Be that as it may, Ambrose says Toshiba is entering a hugely competitive field with this device, which is dominated by the iPad. Moreover, Ambrose says the Android 3 feels unpolished compared to iOS, although he points out that this should improve quickly.
Toshiba says its 10.1-inch tablet has front and back cameras (2MP and 5MP, respectively). It adds that the device's battery should last up to eight hours, when used for mixed Web-browsing and video playback, both of which are supported in landscape and portrait mode.
According to Domenico Gargarella, regional GM for Toshiba SA, the tablet will be positioned in “the high-end segment” because of its hardware specifications.
The company says the AT100 retails at a recommended price of R5 499, while the Qosmio F750 will retail at a recommended price of R14 999.
