Toshiba sets Guinness record

Toshiba says Guinness World Records has certified its stamp-sized hard drives as the smallest in the world.

Reuters reports that the company`s recently announced 0.85-inch hard drives have storage capacity of up to 4GB and will be used in products such as mobile phones and camcorders.

Toshiba aims to start producing the hard drives by the end of the year.

Intel plans new chip names

Newsfactor.com reports that Intel is planning to institute a new labelling system for its PC chips, focusing on overall performance rather than clock speeds.

Intel rival AMD has used a numbering system rather than a clock speed-based system since 2001.

Forthcoming Pentium and Celeron chips are expected to have a number that will help consumers compare price by referencing key factors.

The first Intel chip to use the new system is expected to be a Pentium M processor, code-named "Dothan", the company`s first 90-nanometer laptop chip.

Mobile media satellite launched

SK Telecom and Mobile Broadcasting, a Japanese satellite broadcasting company set up by Toshiba, have launched a satellite dedicated to beaming digital television and programmes to mobile terminals.

It will allow the companies to start delivering more than 100 television and radio programmes to mobile devices at much faster speeds than previously possible, reports FT.com.

The channels are expected to be offered through existing mobile phone operators and the project has received the backing of more than 200 companies.
