Train virtually anywhere, says Masterskill

Johannesburg, 23 May 2000

At the Computer Faire in Midrand today, Masterskill Training, wholly owned by Softline, introduced its virtual campus, Mskill.com, to the training market. The online training offering provides students with access to almost 200 courses.

Masterskill bought the back-end technology and source coding from Element K, formerly Ziff Davis. The product has been customised to Masterskill`s requirements for its local audience.

Mskill.com includes pre-and post-training assessment, and a management system that provides detailed reports on student progress. The strong outcomes-based element of the product offering, said Terry Kier, joint-MD of Masterskill, is one of its differentiating qualities.

Kier added that product roll-out was originally planned for the end of the year, but this was changed because of the huge demand from the market. "Masterskill has introduced a different product to the market and we`ve used an innovative approach it`s not just transplanting a product."

Kier noted that the increasing significance of and delivery within the industry is one of the core ideas around which Mskill.com was designed.

Mike Miller, international brand manager at Element K, said there was a growing move towards technology-based training in the US. He explained that technology is playing an ever-increasing role in instructor-led training, which has been the primary method of training in the US for a number of years.

"Despite the fact that training is absolutely essential to ensure that IT systems are properly leveraged, statistically training seems to be the lowest priority when it comes to corporate expenditure," said Madeleine van Tonder, strategic projects director for Masterskill Training.

"And yet it can pay for itself many times over when it comes to the bottom line. Mskill.com will enable corporates and consumers to access just-in-time learning that will not infringe on productive time and comes at an extremely reasonable price."
