Transnet has donated three mobile labs to rural schools in an attempt to assist maths, science and technology education.
The labs are worth R250 000 each, and the first one was given to Batshazwayo High School, in Empangeni, by the Transnet National Ports Authority. The other labs will be given to two more schools this weekend.
“Improving the performance of learners in maths, science and technology still remains a focus area for the country. The provision of adequate resources and infrastructure to enable teachers to teach these subjects is crucial,” the company says.
It adds that often these subjects require learners to conduct experiments and apply practical work in order to help them grasp certain concepts, and so having the right equipment and infrastructure in schools is key to optimising the teaching of these subjects.
“Infrastructure development is a challenge, especially in schools that are in rural areas, and addressing these infrastructure backlogs will cost millions, if not billions, of rands. It is for this reason that the department has called on its stakeholders, including businesses, to lend a hand in its quest to provide quality education to learners.”
The company says this is its response to that call, and the move was also made in celebration of National Science Week.
The mobile laboratories are furnished and fitted with equipment.
