Transtel opts for R14m Oracle solution in re-engineering move

Johannesburg, 16 May 2001

Oracle South Africa is to supply its latest applications software to support a R14 million business process re-engineering project within Transtel, the tele-communications division of Transnet.

The Oracle solution is designed to add substantially to the value that Transtel will bring to the second national operator (SNO), supporting Transnet`s participation, as outlined in the new government telecommunications policy directions.

The first phase of the project also draws on the abilities of companies partnering Oracle, as the planned three- to five-year migration of the software proceeds. These companies include Cornastone, arivia.kom and Omega Alpha International.

Cornastone, a wholly black-owned and managed IT company, and arivia.kom are providing staff resources for the project as part of Oracle`s ongoing black empowerment and skills-transfer initiative, known as Ilima.

Omega Alpha is assisting with the database migration, as the provider of the previous software used by Transtel.

The scope of the project includes all aspects of financial systems, project management, human resources and, eventually, the entire planning functionality needed for Transtel to assumes a key role in a liberalised telecommunications market.

Karl Socikwa, CEO of Transtel, says the primary objectives of the project include an improvement in service delivery to Transtel customers, the streamlining of internal processes, data integrity, reliability and rapid implementation.

"In addition, the project had to be delivered by a company that meets our empowerment objectives, which Oracle does with distinction," says Socikwa.

Marc Gower, Oracle`s marketing director, regards Transtel as a strategic account for his company. "We are able to provide the quality of service and Internet experience needed by Transtel, whose objectives in skills transfer and upliftment mirror our own. Both parties are confident that this implementation will have a very favourable return on investment, delivered in a short period of time."

Tsepa Ramoriting, Transnet account manager for Oracle SA says: "After about six months of negotiation, we have achieved a deal which is very favourable for both parties. This process will serve as an excellent foundation for the long-term relationship between Transtel and Oracle."
