Trend, Wipro

Trend Micro has partnered with global IT services company Wipro Technologies to offer virtualisation for data centres, says CRN.

Under the agreement, Wipro becomes a global reseller of Trend Micro's threat management, Web, messaging, server and endpoint . The partnership will involve the development of secure public and private cloud computing environments and compliance of critical IT assets.

"Partnering with Wipro allows us to harness their global technology services and capabilities and together we will create 'security that fits' by offering scalable, tailored solutions," says Dave Patnaik, MD of Trend Micro ANZ.

Storage virtualisation becomes mandatory

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) expert Hu Yoshida has suggested that storage virtualisation is set to become mandatory, reports Zycko.

The migration of data from one physical system to another is a problem encountered by many firms, with Yoshida claiming such a process can take six months. With data inaccessible for that time, traditional migration can be highly ineffective and costly, HDS's VP and CTO warned. The obvious way to get around this is to deploy storage virtualisation.

As storage systems get larger, an increased amount of data will share the same frame - until, inevitably, it becomes inefficient. By opting for a shared pool across different systems, this can be avoided.

Banks save through virtualisation

The finance industry is benefiting from technologies such as virtualisation and cloud computing, with more banks across the UK seeing the advantages of outsourcing their IT infrastructure, according to Rack Space.

Banking on saving a net of £8 million (R96 million) from IT and energy costs, the building society nationwide is virtualising 500 servers in its system. Savings for the firm will come from the consolidation of hardware assets by removing old hardware, and increasing the efficiency of existing physical servers.

Virtualisation contributes to a lessened need for hardware space by companies. These initiatives also help to cut energy costs and contribute to a 'greener' approach to technology solutions.
