Triathlon community joins BSG in its social outreach programme

Johannesburg, 10 Dec 2010

BSG is extremely proud of the relationship with the LEAP Science and Maths School. As an organisation specialising in partnering with our clients, to drive change through innovated process, technology and people practices, the ongoing development of our youth in the critical areas of science and maths is vital for the future of our country.

The LEAP Science and Maths school aims to transform educationally disadvantaged communities in South Africa through mathematics and science-focused education initiatives.

Drawing from its staunch support of both an active lifestyle and the quest for performance, BSG recognised the opportunity to bridge the gap between the diverse socio- economic classes within South Africa through sport. As co-sponsors of the world class BSG Energade Triathlon Series, BSG has a unique opportunity to create a platform to enhance the company's education-based social responsibility programme at the school.

2010 was a year of many firsts for the BSG Energade Triathlon Series race organisers, with process improvements and innovation introduced to enhance the Triseries experience for athletes. In addition to this, triathletes were invited to join BSG in making a difference to the lives of the LEAP Science and Maths scholars through a monetary donation when they entered a race. A number of triathletes opened their hearts and responded to this cause, which is testament to the warmth and giving nature of the triathlon community.

At the Cape Town leg of the series, the learners took on the challenge and made their impact on the race. They organised themselves into teams, and after months of hard work, finally participated. They were trained by members of the BSG Elite Triathlon Team during various development clinics that were held at the school. The Elite Team also ran a raffle competition at the start of the 2010 Series, and was able to raise enough funds to buy four bicycles and helmets for the learners. The members of the Elite Team also personally donated some action gear they were no longer using. Inspired by this, a fellow triathlete, Linda Doke, made a substantial donation of triathlon apparel. As a result of this combined effort, the learners were well kitted out on race day.

Those who did not race decided that they too could make their mark and volunteered to be part of the logistics team. They aided athletes during the on-the-day registration process and ensured athlete hydration at the water points as well as at the finish line. These gestures were their way of giving thanks to the triathlon community, who had made a difference in their lives through participating in the raffle initiative as well as the cash donations.

To add to the monies already collected, BSG was further motivated to approach its clients and suppliers, who in the spirit of giving back, were delighted to make a donation to the school instead of receiving the annual festive season gift. The generosity of the triathlon community as well as the BSG clients, suppliers and employees resulted in a R10 000 donation being made to the LEAP Science and Maths School.

On behalf of the School, the BSG Energade race organisers would like to thank everyone for their donations and look forward to repeating this success in 2011.

Together we can make a difference to our world!
