Tu Me threatens Skype with free calls
Internet protocol (VOIP) app called Tu Me; which rivals Skype and Apple iMessage, CNET reports.
Tu Me is available for free to anyone with an iPhone worldwide, regardless of the phone operator, PC Mag states.
According to Telef'onica, an Android version of the app is in the works and will be released in coming weeks.
The app lets users make calls, record and send voice messages, exchange text messages, and share photos and location information with other Tu Me users, without having to switch between apps or tabs. The service works through a user's mobile data plan or over WiFi.
Network operators have traditionally viewed such VOIP apps as a threat, but Telef'onica claims it would rather keep customers than lose them to other products and services, BBC News says.
The telco explains messages would be encrypted and promised not to provide third-party access to content unless required to do so by the courts.
"We've seen the growing popularity of communication apps on smartphones, but we believe we've gone one better with Tu Me using our knowledge and insights of how people use their devices," adds Telef'onica Digital's chief commercial officer, Stephen Shurrock.
