The University of Pretoria (Tuks) has become the first tertiary institute in Africa to join the global EMC Academic Alliance (EAA) programme.

The initiative is aimed at developing a new generation of IT skills and workers to meet the growing demand for such people.

An EMC statement says Tuks joins more than 265 universities and colleges, in 14 countries around the world, that have incorporated the company's curriculum into their IT and computer science programmes.

Jacques van Wyk, senior lecturer at the department of electrical, electronic and computer engineering, says undergraduate students who are enrolled for computer engineering will be the first to benefit from the partnership, by having the EMC information storage and management course included in their curriculum.

The statement explains the information storage and management course educates students on the concepts and principles of information management and storage technologies, and offers a study of technologies that are critical to IT professionals.

Once students have completed the course, they will have an opportunity to achieve an EMC-proven professional certification. The certification can be used by students to demonstrate their proficiency in information management to potential employers and also to progress to more advanced educational courses.

“By participating in EMC's EAA programme, Tuks is giving its students skills and training that will provide a substantial advantage for their future careers,” says EMC global services services VP Tom Clancy.
