TV, radio digital migration roadmap to be finalised

Depending on the availability of the working group`s (DMWG), chairperson, the Department of Communications will meet this week to finalise the roadmap on the TV and digital migration process and its timeframes.

This follows a meeting two weeks ago, during which the DMWG sub-committees submitted their progress reports to the working group. Sub-committee member Zoyisile Mshunqane presented the progress reports on behalf of all four sub-committees, says the department`s acting chief director, Albi Modise.

"The meeting is likely to be held sometime this week - this is however dependent on the availability of chairperson Norman Munzhelele," says Modise.

Mshunqane, who also sits in the policy and content sub-committee, is still standing in for Munzhelele, who was reportedly out of the country two weeks ago, says Modise.

The contents of the progress reports are yet to be discussed at the schedule meeting. "Depending on the nature of the discussions, the document will be tabled in front of minister Ivy Matsepe-Cassaburri as a way forward," Modise says.

"The document still has to be approved by the minister, however we can say it is a working document."

The department is still of the view that the process of developing the recommendations for the policy process on the digital migration will be finalised by the end of this financial year, March 2006.

"Thereafter, we hope that the implementation will start in the next financial year," says Modise.
