The University of Cape Town (UCT) has eased campus life for both students and teachers by making class lists readily available to lecturers and applicant statuses to students, via the Internet.
Using Software AG`s iXpress intranet/Internet enablement solution, lecturers merely type in a course number to access an up-to-date list of all students registered for that specific course," explains Jeffrey Thurtell, MIS manager at UCT.
Since the end of last year, students - and future course attendees - have been able to use iXpress to access application statuses, as well as related information including housing and funding. Says Thurtell: "During our admission period this year, we found the quality of telephonic queries had changed - students were checking details on the Web prior to calling in, simplifying any enquiries, and allowing staff to respond quicker." Approximately 4000 queries were made to this page during the first few weeks of January.
According to Thurtell, reasons behind the technology selection were based on existing systems using Software AG products. "The introduction and integration of this technology only required an extension of these skills. We also enjoy a good working relationship with the SPL`s Cape Town office," he adds.
Schalk Viljoen, general manager at SPL - a member of the Dimension Data Group, and sole local distributor of Software AG products - explains that iXpress is designed to specifically provide business-critical capabilities to conventional web server architectures, and supports high-volume, high-end business applications.
"iXpress allows users to take advantage of the Web to ease development and deployment, increase profitability and market-share, and provide additional services to users," he adds.
