UK to debut space HD streaming camera

The project, which aims to provide video of the Earth's surface with a resolution comparable to that of Google Earth, is a joint venture being carried out by the UK, Russia and Canada.

At the UK Space Conference on Monday, Willetts said the HD camera and a medium-resolution counterpart will be designed, built and tested by the Science and Technology Facilities Council's (STFC) RAL Space department, at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.

According to Mirror, smartphone users will be able to watch live video of the Earth taken from the International Space Station.

Willets said: “I believe the pictures will be better than in Google Earth.”

The HD streaming video cam will let you ogle over the Blue Planet as well allowing searches for videos of particular locations, Geek.com writes.

Users will be able to zoom in and out, and basically steer the camera from side to side. They can also rewind and fast forward as they investigate further into specific areas of the Earth.

They will also be able to constantly track the location of the space station to anticipate when it will pass over a particular location.
