Ukash goes live on PokerStars.com in SA

World's largest poker site extends deal with Ukash for consumers in SA to pay online securely using cash

Johannesburg, 24 Nov 2009

PokerStars.com, the world's largest poker site, has chosen Ukash, which has the largest prepaid cash-issuing estate in the world, as the alternative payment method of choice for its South Africa operation, allowing consumers to place bets safely online using cash.

Ukash is long established in the South African market and now hundreds of thousands of PokerStars.com users in the country will be able to choose Ukash as their favoured payment method, allowing consumers to pay online securely and anonymously using cash, instead of having to use credit or debit cards. Poker players can benefit from the anonymity and added security of not needing to input their financial details online, reducing the risk of card fraud and identity theft.

With rising consumer sensitivity around anonymity and sharing personal financial information on poker and other gaming and entertainment sites, the Ukash e-cash solution appeals to millions of digitally excluded customers without credit or debit cards, as well as those who simply prefer to use cash. The popularity of Ukash continues to grow and it is now available in shops and online in 26 countries, with more than 300 000 physical issuing points globally.

Mark Chirnside, chief executive officer of Ukash, said: “PokerStars is a market-leading company and a global giant in the poker market. Ukash is already well established in South Africa and we are pleased to be extending our existing global partnership with PokerStars by offering our payment method to its customers in this market. As a company, Ukash continues to sign strategic deals around the world, as we extend our global footprint, in the pursuit of making online shopping available to anybody, everywhere in the world.”

PokerStars is the world's largest poker site, with millions of members worldwide, and in 2009 it broke the Guinness World Record for holding the largest online tournament. It offers many different popular poker games, including Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Stud, Draw poker and mixed game variants.

Ukash

Ukash is the fastest growing global e-commerce payment solution to enable consumers from anywhere in the world to shop, pay and play online safely using cash. Ukash is a secure payment method developed to protect personal identity and financial information when making online transactions, eliminating the threat of credit and debit card fraud for consumers and repudiations and charge-backs for retailers.

Established in 2001 under the holding company Smart Voucher, Ukash is available online and in more than 300 000 physical points of purchase in 26 countries around the world. In 2008, Ukash established a strategic partnership with South African payments giant Blue Label Telecoms - part owned by Microsoft, to develop the brand's services.

Ukash is regulated by the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) and operates as one of only a small number of Electronic Money Institutions, a status that allows a single maximum online cash payment transaction of up to lb500/EUR750.

Uniquely numbered Ukash vouchers are available through payment terminals in retail outlets across Europe, South Africa and Australia and are also issued online from the company's Web site in selected European territories.

The technology behind Ukash is protected by patents registered across the Smart Voucher database and functionality and is, as such, protected by Patent Law in all the major economies of the world. Ukash is a registered trademark of Smart Voucher.
