Ukash launches into Mexico with two new partnerships

Johannesburg, 02 Nov 2010

Ukash, the world's fastest growing online-cash payments company, continues its expansion in Latin America with the announcement that it is now available in Mexico through deals with MIT and Citadel.

Mexico is a thriving but cash-orientated economy, which means that many consumers are unable to make transactions online. As of today, consumers in Mexico will benefit from using Ukash vouchers online in one of two ways.

Through a partnership with MIT (Mercadotecnia, Ideas y Tecnolog'ia) Ukash vouchers are issued at point of sale from nearly 400 convenience stores that provide mobile airtime and other payment services through the popular Compra y Paga brand. Ukash vouchers are available in denominations of 200 and 500 Mexican Peso, obtained by simply exchanging cash for a voucher.

Ukash vouchers can also be obtained online through a deal with Citadel, where consumers can visit the Citadel payment page and select a voucher from around 150 to 1 500 Mexican Peso. Consumers can use their Internet banking service from the leading Mexican banks and receive their voucher by e-mail. The vouchers can then be spent online wherever Ukash is accepted.

Commenting, Paul Coxhill, Marketing Director, Ukash said: “The deals with MIT and Citadel mark Ukash's first presence in Mexico, a country which we believe will see thousands of consumers benefit from spending cash online. The addition of another country to our network, Mexico being the 32nd, is a significant step for Ukash as we continue to make every effort to allow anyone, anywhere in the world to shop online.”

Ukash vouchers, which can be used to pay, play and shop online using cash, are a safe and easy alternative payment method to debit and credit cards. Globally, Ukash is available at more than 420 000 physical issuing points and spans more than 50 countries and six continents.

Ukash

Ukash, the world's largest prepaid-cash issuing estate, enables consumers from anywhere in the world to shop, pay and play online safely using cash. Ukash is a secure payment method developed to protect personal identity and financial information when making online transactions, eliminating the threat of credit and debit card fraud for consumers and repudiations and charge-backs for retailers.

Established in 2001 under the holding company Smart Voucher, Ukash has grown to more than 420 000 physical points of purchase, and is available in more than 50 countries and six continents around the world. In 2008, Ukash established a strategic partnership with South African payments giant Blue Label Telecoms - part owned by Microsoft, to develop the brand's services.

Ukash is regulated by the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) and operates as one of only a small number of Electronic Money Institutions, a status that allows a single maximum online cash payment transaction of up to lb500/EUR750.

Uniquely numbered Ukash vouchers are available through payment terminals in retail outlets across Europe, South Africa, South America, Canada and Australia and are also issued online from the company's Web site in selected European territories.

The technology behind Ukash is protected by patents registered across the Smart Voucher database and functionality and is, as such, protected by Patent Law in all the major economies of the world. Ukash is a registered trademark of Smart Voucher.
