Ultrabooks to shake up semiconductor market

EE Times reports.

IHS predicts that shipments of ultrabooks will rise to 136.5 million in 2015, from less than one million in 2011. By 2015, ultrabooks will account for 42% of notebook shipments, says IHS.

According to Taiwan News, while ultrabooks are categorised as notebook computers, they use different components than conventional mobile PCs to achieve their super-thin and light characteristics, and are likely to shake up computer supply chains.

One major semiconductor winner in the transition will be the sensor, including devices based on micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology.

"With ultrabook shipments expected to rise to account for 42% of the notebook market by 2015, this represents a major growth opportunity for MEMS," CBR quotes J'er'emie Bouchaud, IHS principal analyst of MEMS, as saying.
