Unisys has expanded its open source capabilities with Unisys Open and Secure Integrated Solutions (OASIS), an integrated, certified set of software suites targeted at large businesses.
It is based on open standards and supported through Unisys global services and vertical-industry capabilities.
"Unisys OASIS and associated services enable clients to take a disciplined, secure approach to realising the cost, agility and security advantages that open source solutions can provide," says Bernard Donnelly, consulting services manager at Unisys Africa.
"The introduction of Unisys OASIS marks another major milestone in Open Source Solutions, a major Unisys growth initiative announced as part of the company`s strategic corporate repositioning in November 2005. Unisys sees significant opportunity to partner with clients to help them leverage open source and open standards to realise their strategic imperatives."
The Unisys OASIS software suites provide a range of options that include:
* Application server suites enable companies to migrate;
* Database server suites;
* Solutions for rapid migration to an open source platform; and
* Services for developing Unisys 3D Visible Enterprise (3D-VE) blueprints that enable evolution toward a service-oriented architecture (SOA).
Open source software - freely available under recognised licences from providers such as Red Hat, Novell, JBoss, MySQL and PostgreSQL, and enhanced by the open source community - liberates clients from control of core technology by a single proprietary vendor and provides a crucial means for developing next-generation SOA. SOA makes business programs a standards-based service where elements of legacy and next-generation software can be integrated and assembled quickly to meet rapidly changing business requirements.
"It`s the new economic reality of enterprise computing that IT executives must continually do more with less to meet the constantly growing needs of the businesses they support," says Ali Shadman, VP, Innovative Programs Business, Systems and Technology, Unisys. "With a long heritage in enterprise computing and mission-critical solutions, Unisys is exceptionally qualified to help clients leverage the open source and open standards model to turn that challenge into a business opportunity.
"Unisys has built a comprehensive solution ecosystem combining services skills and vertical-industry solutions expertise with advanced open source technology," says Anthony Gold, VP and GM, Open Source Business, Unisys. "This `Unisys difference` helps enterprise clients unlock the true value of open source and open standards to realise optimal performance and cost advantages."
Unisys consultation, deployment and management services provide a critical support framework for OASIS. Open source solutions can reduce up-front licence fees and costs but require integration and management to deliver maximum benefit. Unisys consultants implement, optimise and manage open source solutions for clients.
Unisys also brings key components of the OASIS framework to its vertical industry systems aimed at industries such as financial services, public sector, communications, transport, consumer and industrial products, and media.
Unisys consultants help clients identify the most critical business processes and the applications that support them to get the most benefit from open source migration or deployment. It gives them secure business operations, better performance for customer service and satisfaction, improved competitive advantage a more agile IT management with minimised risks, improved operational efficiency and more effective cost control.
