Unisys has been tipped as the winning bidder for SA`s controversial national identification system, reports Business Day.

If market speculation is accurate, the company will be informed by the government today. The tender is worth about R800 million.

While Unisys has not received official notification, it has already been congratulated by rival bidder, PQ Africa, adding to speculation that its bid had been successful, says Business Day.

Unisys business development manager, Art Bergensen confirmed that there had been "speculation that Unisys has won" but he was reluctant to comment further until some official notification has been received.

The tender - one of the largest in the country - will create a fingerprint database storing prints of every citizen in the country. The cards, with encrypted fingerprints, will be used to claim pension payments or benefits from other state services.

The government claims that such a system will help wipe-out high levels of fraud in SA, currently costing the state billions of rands every year.
