EMC Corporation, the world`s leading provider of enterprise storage systems, software and services, today announced that Universo Online Inc. (UOL), Latin America`s largest Internet service provider, has put an EMC Enterprise Storage Network (ESN) at the center of its information infrastructure to keep pace with its explosive growth and deliver exceptional online service availability.
"In Brazil alone, where Universo Online is based, the number of Internet users is expected to skyrocket from 10 to 28 million by 2001", said Daniel Amaral, Chief Information Officer, Universo Online. "To stay ahead of this growth and provide our customers with the best possible service, we have based our entire information infrastructure on an EMC Enterprise Storage Network.
"Consolidating our storage onto EMC was our most strategic infrastructure decision for us, because our business is content and content lives in storage. With EMC as our infrastructure backbone, we are assured of delivering fast, constant access for our subscribers, maintaining our market leadership and attracting more customers to our site."
ESN comprises a dedicated, high-speed network that uses standard network-attached storage capabilities, such as IP, and standard channel technology, such as Fibre Channel, SCSI, and ESCON, to weave together heterogeneous storage devices, switches, hubs, and servers into a single, easily managed, centralized information infrastructure. ESNs consolidate distributed information from departments and business units throughout the enterprise as well as from remote locations over wide-area networks.
UOL`s ESN is comprised of 14 terabytes of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems, EMC Connectrix Enterprise Storage Network Systems, EMC Data Manager (EDM), as well as EMC software - including EMC PowerPath, EMC TimeFinder, EMC ControlCenter, EMC InfoMover, and EMC Volume Logix.
UOL, based in S~ao Paulo, Brazil, also has implemented EMC Celerra File Servers, EMC`s ultra-reliable network-attached storage (NAS) solutions, as a critical component of its ESN.
"We`re finding new ways to raise our standards for online information availability and performance by continuing to broaden our use of EMC`s rich suite of storage, software and services," said Amaral. "For example, EMC`s solutions have enabled us to boost our online performance by 300 percent and reduce backup and recovery times of critical databases from hours to minutes."
EMC`s ESN is supporting both UOL`s business-to-business and business-to-consumer applications, including web content, web hosting, electronic mail, and audio- and video-on-demand. UOL applications and platforms supported by EMC include Sun servers, Oracle and Windows NT.
"Universo Online clearly lives by the new rule of the Internet economy - content is king," said Mike Ruffolo, EMC`s Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing. "With the Internet driving its subscriber`s needs, as well as its own, UOL is depending on EMC to help manage its rapid growth with a fast, flexible information infrastructure."
UOL, based in S~ao Paulo, Brazil, has qualified under the EMC Proven E-Infostructure program, which enables selected Internet-focused companies to publicly validate their world-class information infrastructures. This program defines the highest standards for information availability, scalability, and management.

UOL
Recognizing the advantages first movers have in online businesses, Brazil`s two leading publishers, Abril and Folha de S. Paulo, merged in 1996 to form UOL. More than a million subscribers rely on UOL for dial-up, mail, and content access, with rapid growth on the horizon. Already the largest Portuguese-language Internet site in the world, UOL has aggressive expansion plans, both inside and outside Latin America - specifically Portugal, Spain, and the United States.
