Unlimited GPRS data for MTN users

Johannesburg, 11 Nov 2004

MTN users are set to receive unlimited GPRS data solutions to access e-mail and calendar information from their smartphones or laptops. The unlimited solution, to be launched by LayerOne in late November, will be aimed at removing the risk of high data bills for corporate mobile users, while at the same time ensuring the users have unlimited real-time access to groupware information through push or live connect technology.

Says Stuart Hardy, Managing Director of LayerOne: "LayerOne will provide unlimited GPRS data solutions to corporate companies that use the LayerOne mobile solution with LayerOne GPRS services. The solution will allow corporate mobile users to send and receive unlimited e-mails and calendar changes to and from their mobile devices at a fixed monthly cost, eliminating the risk of uncontrollable and high GPRS bills."

The unlimited data solution will be restricted to MTN users as MTN is the only company that has introduced a proper reverse billing model that allows LayerOne to bill corporate companies for GPRS data as apposed to the individual user being billed by the networks. This model allows LayerOne to assume the risk of the GPRS data charges as apposed to the corporate company.

"LayerOne will introduce the unlimited GPRS portion of the mobile service for around R100 per month which means that in most cases corporate companies and users will be able to reduce their GPRS bills for mobile data by up to as much as 80%. We believe this solution will encourage more corporate companies and users to discover the benefits of using GPRS without the risk of high cost, and hopefully with more users using GPRS we can expect the cost of GPRS to be reduced by the network providers in the future," says Hardy.

LayerOne will also provide its clients with lower GPRS rates through Vodacom, but these rates will be billed directly to the user at the lower rate and not to the corporate company. The rates available for Vodacom users will be the reverse billing rates of R9 per Meg on the LayerOne APN. The new unlimited service will be available for corporate companies and users that make use of smartphones such as the Palm Treo, Imate, Sony Ericsson, Nokia communicator and the new HP, etc.
