Nero 6 Reloaded introduces new features and functionality, and appears to be targeted towards the digital video enthusiast.
New features that Nero`s creator Ahead introduced on Reloaded include video capture and the import and export of DVD-Video (VR) on both DVD-RW and DVD-RAM - which make Nero 6 the first version that allows users to burn dual layer DVDs in DVD-R format. It also has a photo slide show (SVCD and VCD) feature.
The integration of the MPEG-2 encoder means existing media data is processed faster, with a marked improvement in quality. MPEG-2 allows coding of studio quality video for digital TV, high-definition CD-Roms and TV-broadcasting.
For photo slides, Ahead has implemented a photo utility suite called PhotoSnap. PhotoSnap is a baby brother to the likes of Fireworks and Photoshop when it comes to editing photos, but it can be useful for those little touch-ups.
The Startsmart 2 utility makes CD or DVD recording a little easier, with a guide taking users through the digital media creation process. Another function for the sluggish user is Startsmart 2`s integration with Windows auto play. Whenever a blank CD or DVD is inserted, the application will automatically open.
Nero Express 6 supports ISO 9660:1999, which means that media copied on other burning software will be compatible with Reloaded.
This also allows for more verification options, and the lead out time has been reduced from 90 seconds to around 10 seconds, which can give an additional 12MB of storage space on the standard CD. Which is not much when talking about a 4GB DVD, but you never know when it will come in handy.
Ahead has created a fuller, more rounded software, but the upgrade from previous Nero editions is not an essential move for the everyday person.
As a backup tool for data or music, Nero 'Reloaded` is not very different from the original Nero, but the addition of DVD-VR will excite many a digital video enthusiast.
Nero 6 Reloaded is available countrywide at R899.
