Uplifting IT trainer skills

Johannesburg, 19 Jul 2005

CompTIA South Africa has created its first CompTIA Authorised Trainer (CAT) credential, which aims to uplift trainer skills and help students identify credible trainers in the technology field.

CAT is available in SA and is expected to be rolled-out globally in 2006. The five-day training programme, for which one of CompTIA`s gold partners On-site will provide training space, is scheduled from next week.

Loraine Vorster, regional director of CompTIA SA, says to qualify as a CAT trainer, a candidate needs a minimum of a CompTIA CTT+ (certified technical trainer) certification, with the exception of trainers authorised to train CTT+.

She says CAT is a technology tool that will cut down on fraudulent fly-by-night trainers who have caused immeasurable damage to the credibility of certification as a measure of competency.

"The CAT programme consists of two parts: a theoretical computer-based test, and a video test that will take place during one of the classes, whereby a trainer has to prove they understand the subject matter and the ability to prepare students for exams," says Vorster.

"It`s long overdue that qualified CompTIA trainers are recognised. Computer training companies and independent trainers alike deserve to have generic qualifications, thus ensuring clients get the maximum benefit from their training investment."

She says the benefits of CAT include recognising trainers with current subject matter content, training skills through the CompTIA CTT+ certification, uplifting trainer skills in the industry, and creating a global industry standard for trainers.
