UPS - the solution to unexpected power failures

Johannesburg, 09 Mar 2006

As businesses of all sizes tally the financial and opportunity costs of recent unexpected power outages in the Cape and across SA, emphasis has been placed on contingency planning. Although the inconvenience can`t be avoided entirely, measures can be taken to minimise the impact of power failures.

No company in South Africa can afford not to have an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) right now, but the trick is to select the right UPS.

UPSs are tailored to suit your kind of business as well as your budget. Choosing the right solution for your business ensures that you are covered.

They come in different sizes and specifications to cater for small offices to large-scale data warehouses. They have increased power ratings to provide effective protection for more equipment, and backup from minutes to several hours - allowing users ample time to save and store important data and keep critical applications up and running.

There are three types UPS technologies:

The passive-interactive or offline UPS, which is the most frequently, used technology for the protection of personal computers in relatively undisturbed environments:

An example of a cost-effective UPS is the MGE Pulsar Ellipse ASR. It is the first UPS on the market with real surge protective technology allowing power to stay on for four hours when there is a power failure because of its high surge energy absorption ability.

The ASR surge protection technology is equally effective against surges caused by lightning and industrial switching, further ensuring backup, as well as protecting telecoms, modem, surveillance cameras, broadband and between up to a thousand Ethernet lines.

Then there are line-interactive UPSs made for mid-range technology to protect file servers.

Lastly, there are double-conversion or online UPSs targeted at high-end technology for centralised protection of file servers. These are more robust as they guarantee constant power quality whatever the problems on the AC input may be - ideal for some of the areas in the Cape that suffered constant disruptions and interference.

These UPSs are critical to minimise damage caused by power variances and disturbances.
