US deploys RFID toll system

TransCore has signed a deal with the North Carolina Turnpike Authority in the US to provide frequency identification (RFID) technology for toll collection systems, states RFID News.

The first installation will be on North Carolina's new electronic toll road system, the Triangle Expressway.

The expressway will use an RFID-based toll collection system and is scheduled to open in 2011.

Hotel to begin smartphone trials

Holiday Inn is set to start trials whereby smartphone users will be able to use their devices to unlock their room at a hotel, reports Gadget Venue.

The system will be tested next month at Chicago O'Hare Rosemont and another Holiday Inn at Houston, Downtown Convention Centre.

The hotel is looking into RFID technology and has signed up Open Ways to develop a software application for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android devices, to enable hotel guests to unlock the door to their hotel room.

Researchers develop firewalls for wallets

US-based Kena Kai has rolled out technology designed to thwart theft, says PR Newswire.

DataSafe Wallets uses multiple layers of radio frequency shielding material that blocks unwanted access to the user's personal information via their credit card.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts claim nearly 40 million RFID credit cards are vulnerable to skimming attacks, which harvests names and credit-card details.
