US govt turns to Amazon cloud

The Washington Post.

This follows news of the White House calling for government agencies to move to the cloud and consolidate their centres.

In the past, government agencies have been hesitant to make the move into the cloud because many cloud servers do not comply with rules like the International Traffic in Arms Regulations; which requires that only be accessible in the US, explains PC Mag.

However, Amazon says GovCloud content cannot be accessed by people outside of US borders. NASA is among the 100 plus agencies using AWS GovCloud.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) global public sector VP Teresa Carlson says: “Today, over 100 government agencies are taking advantage of AWS and we're excited to continue working with agencies as they implement the Federal Cloud First to become more efficient, agile, and innovative through more effective use of technology infrastructure.”

PC World indicates the AWS GovCloud is conceptually similar to efforts by Google and Microsoft to deliver cloud services that meet government restrictions for data handling.

Within the AWS GovCloud, agencies can implement Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Amazon Simple Storage Service, and Amazon Virtual Private Cloud resources and take advantage of the flexibility, scalability, and affordability of the cloud.
