US Navy security test of 3Com

Embedded firewall included in DARPA Fact File
By 3Com Corporation
Johannesburg, 22 Jul 2002

3Com Corporation cites mention of its Embedded Firewall technology co-developed with Secure Computing Corporation, San Jose, California, in a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Fact File posted on the agency`s Web site entitled "A Compendium of DARPA Programs".

The 3Com Embedded Firewall solution, referenced in the document as the DARPA embedded firewall, was identified by the US Navy as the most promising technology after it successfully stopped a military red team.

DARPA is the central research and development organisation for the US Department of Defense (DoD). It manages and directs selected basic and applied research and development projects for DoD, and pursues research and technology where and payoff are both very high and where success may provide dramatic advances for traditional military roles and missions.

The DARPA Fact File provides short summaries of DARPA programs in FY2002 and FY2003 and groups the programs into three broad areas: National Level Problems, Operational Dominance and High-Risk/High-Payoff Technologies. The 3Com Embedded Firewall solution is categorised as a technology that addresses national level problems because it provides a solution to "urgent, difficult and dangerous threats to US national , which require an in-depth response beyond that of the Military Services".

Below is an excerpt from the DARPA Fact File document found at http://www.darpa.mil/body/NewsItems/darpa_fact.html:

"The Operational Partners in Experimentation program rapidly puts advanced information assurance technology into the warfighter`s hands for accelerated transition to the operational community and improved feedback to the research community. Operational Partners in Experimentation provides a risk-managed process for high-tempo operators to evaluate revolutionary, but experimental, technologies like embedded firewall or anomaly-based intrusion detection systems. The DARPA embedded firewall demonstrated tremendous success in stopping a military red team during the 2001 Fleet Battle Experiment India, where it was identified by the Navy as the most promising technology. The Navy has already begun the process of programming and budgeting to buy these embedded firewalls in bulk, and the specific technical results from the ramp-up to these exercises invariably provides feedback crucial to the effective maturation of these technologies."
