vCards emerge as latest SMS technology

Johannesburg, 15 Jun 2006

SMS, the "Short Message Service" on GSM "Global System for Mobile Communications" cellular phones, is becoming more and more valuable as a day-to-day communication vehicle in the commercial arena. It is an inexpensive method of information dissemination and with the launch of the SMS vCard, an electronic business card from SMS Cellular Services, organisations will be able to further enjoy the benefits of SMS technology.

Carsten Hauch, technical director of SMS Cellular Services, explains: "The SMS vCard automates the exchange of personal information typically found on a traditional business card. It is a powerful new means of Personal Data Interchange (PDI) that is automating the traditional business card. SMS messaging has emerged as the most cost-effective, quickest and easiest form of peer-to-peer mobile communication ever. It is only logical that people now use SMS instead of the traditional business card."

The CellSys SMS Gateway supports the exchange of vCards. vCards carry vital directory information such as name, addresses (business, home, mailing, parcel), telephone numbers (home, business, fax, pager, cellular, ISDN, voice, data, video), e-mail addresses and Internet URLs (Universal Resource Locators).

Customers can send their information to their clients via SMS messaging and clients will receive the information as an electronic business card, thereby enabling them to save it directly onto their cellular phone.

"The MMS vCard can also have graphics, your company logo for example," adds Carsten. Call centre environments are one of the industries that benefit from using vCards. Call time will be shortened by eliminating the time (and errors) it takes to exchange information verbally with an operator, resulting in better productivity and cost savings.

Organisations will experience a decrease in communication costs when using SMS in place of traditional communication methods, such as voice calls, letters, faxes and printing costs of business cards.

"The need for organisations to adapt to new technology and to offer their customers enhanced service is of vital importance in today's business world. The SMS vCard will revolutionise personal communications by reducing communication costs and increasing efficiency," notes Carsten.
