VCE gets new leader

Technology veteran Michael Capellas will be taking up the reins to head up the Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) coalition, reports The Wall Street Journal.

VCE was conceived to package storage systems from EMC, Cisco networking hardware and servers and virtualisation software from VMware.

Capellas will also become CEO of a Cisco-EMC joint venture called Acadia, which received funding from Intel and VMware.

Iomega eyes mid-size market

EMC's Iomega has rolled out a 12-bay multi-protocol disc array as it expands its focus from small businesses into the medium-sized business market, says Tech Target.

Analysts claim the Iomega ix12's pricing could disrupt a market that's been a focus of renewed competition among enterprise storage vendors over the past year.

Jay Krone, senior director of EMC's consumer and small products division, says: “Iomega has previously focused on environments supporting less than 100 users, whether in homes or small offices, but the ix12-300r will focus on companies with between 100 and 250 employees to fill a white space that existed between EMC's product lines.”

Dropbox rolls out iPad app

Online storage service Dropbox has released a set of mobile applications, states PC Mag.

Dubbed Dropbox Anywhere, the application allows users to access their files on smartphones as well as the Apple iPad and enables developers to create apps that access Dropbox content.

"With the innovation and growth in mobile computing, the industry is shifting from a PC and desktop-centric model to one where our daily computing experience spans multiple devices and locations," says Drew Houston, CEO and founder of Dropbox.
