VERITAS announces NetBackup BusinesServer 3.4

VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer adds NDMP support, increases client capabilities and enhances platform support for workgroups

VERITAS has introduced Version 3.4 of VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer, bringing expanded scalability and enhanced platform support to this cost-effective, easy-to- and high-performance backup and solution for UNIX, Windows NT and Windows 2000 workgroups.

Version 3.4 also more-closely integrates VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer with VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter, the company`s data protection solution for global enterprise networks and data centres. A common code base and new licensing structure provide a smooth migration path, making it easier for companies to upgrade their storage management and protection capabilities.

"The new version includes an optional agent to VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer, VERITAS NetBackup NDMP, which delivers backup and recovery of Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems that use NDMP, the Network Data Management Protocol. VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer sends NDMP commands to these systems to initiate and control backup and recovery operations," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager, Middle East and Africa at VERITAS Software.

This type of backup and robotics tape-library support further enhances the VERITAS NetBackup solution for workgroup networks, and has attracted the attention of NAS suppliers such as Network Appliance.

The new version of VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer also features increased tape-library slot support. The product can support up to two tape drives per backup server, or a maximum of one robotic tape library with up to two drives and up to 30 slots, eight slots more than the previous version. Multiplexing support also enables up to eight concurrent data streams to be written to a single tape device, optimising tape device usage and performance.

A new option expands client support from four to eight remote servers or workstations. This not only increases the viability of VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer for larger remote sites or workgroups; it allows administrators more flexibility to expand their backup support before upgrading to a more-powerful enterprise backup solution, such as VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter.

The new version integrates support for Microsoft Windows 2000 with ongoing support for Windows NT and legacy Windows environments, and introduces client compression for Windows 2000 and Windows NT environments. This further expands the flexibility of this backup solution, which runs on Solaris, HP-UX, and Windows platforms, and supports a wide range of client system platforms, including most UNIX derivatives, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 95, Novell Netware, Linux and Macintosh.

Another backup feature new to version 3.4 improves the granularity of backup for servers running Microsoft Exchange. VERITAS NetBackup BusinesServer now supports not only the restoration of individual user mailboxes within Microsoft Exchange, but individual messages as well. The enhanced Microsoft Exchange agent for VERITAS NetBackup provides a graphical user interface that allows the selection and scheduling of individual mailbox protection.
