Veritas has agreed to acquire Ejasent, a US-based developer of products for utility computing, for $59 million in cash. The purchase is expected to boost Veritas` utility computing .

Through the acquisition, Veritas gains Ejasent`s application virtualisation software, UpScale, as well as its metering and billing software, MicroMeasure.

Ejasent is the third utility computing-enabling company to be bought by Veritas in 18 months. Jareva and Precise Software were acquired last year for a combined $599 million in stock and cash.

The purchase appears to lend weight to observations that Veritas is moving from a storage-oriented company to an application-centric one, viewing infrastructure in terms of its ability to support the running of applications.

UpScale automatically moves an application from one server to another without disruption to its processes, enabling companies to make better use of servers, be prepared for spikes in server usage and perform maintenance tasks.

UpScale will be available first on Solaris, with a Linux version scheduled for release in early 2005. MicroMeasure runs on Solaris, Windows, Linux and HP-UX.
