Two new storage software capabilities introduced by Veritas Software, enable companies to manage key backup, reporting and disaster recovery functions within high-end enterprise environments. Unlike hardware-based products, the new Veritas FlashSnap and Veritas Volume Replicator solutions support mixed storage array and operating system environments, helping companies to maximise their investment in storage resources.
Veritas FlashSnap provides up to 32 point-in-time "snapshot" copies of enterprise information for key business applications such as data backup or analysis. "By allowing another system to access the snapshots of information created, these critical operations can occur without impacting the performance of the primary server environment," explains Nick van Noordwyk, regional director, Middle East and Africa at Veritas Software. "This technology compares to traditional snapshot techniques that typically create just one to three snapshot copies at a time and are linked to a specific storage array."
Another Veritas newcomer is Version 3.2 of Veritas Volume Replicator, a product that makes it easier and less disruptive for companies to move data between multiple locations and environments for disaster recovery and other large data migration applications. The new version offers impressive replication performance regardless of distance and requires no additional hardware components. It also integrates with Veritas Software clustering technology.
Both Veritas FlashSnap and Veritas Volume Replicator are options that build upon Veritas Volume Manager, which efficiently manages storage resources and serves as the foundation of the Veritas Software storage virtualisation platform. Storage virtualisation enables companies to logically manage storage environments without regard to the underlying physical hardware location or vendor type. According to a Gartner Dataquest study, entitled "Storage Management Software: 2000 Market Share," Veritas Software owns 96.2% of the evolving virtualisation market.
"The tight integration of Veritas FlashSnap and Veritas Volume Replicator with Veritas Volume Manager helps companies leverage our core storage virtualisation technologies," says Van Noordwyk. "This increases IT productivity while reducing administration costs, even as organisations manage increasingly complex storage enterprise environments."
