The local subsidiary of international storage management software vendor, VERITAS Software, has introduced a family of open appliance software which it says will lower the total cost of networked storage.
Elizabeth le Roux, regional manager: South Africa at VERITAS Software, believes the new products advance proven technologies and are capable of transforming industry-standard hardware into enterprise-class network storage appliances.
"VERITAS ServPoint eases the migration to intelligent, networked storage and provides an open and scalable alternative to proprietary storage appliances," she adds.
"Developed specifically for network attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) environments, the family of new products avails customers of VERITAS Software`s proven storage management technologies to transform industry-standard hardware components into open, enterprise-class appliances that simplify storage administration and lower the total cost of storage ownership," continues Le Roux.
Unlike existing appliance point-products that typically lock users into proprietary hardware, VERITAS ServPoint is a family of open appliance software solutions that enable customers to consolidate and re-deploy existing hardware as networked storage appliances. In addition, the ability of the products to extend core VERITAS technology delivers integrated, yet high availability, storage virtualisation and data protection solutions from the company`s broad range of proven, industry-leading storage software products.
"VERITAS ServPoint appliance software is the first product family supported by VERITAS Software`s Advanced Product Team, a new field organisation dedicated to helping customers adopt newer technologies," notes Le Roux.
Companies stand to realise definite benefits in performance and scalability by moving to an architecture where storage intelligence is placed on the network, according to Bob Passmore, research director for storage, Gartner. "This, combined with storage appliance software that allows the customer to leverage existing hardware, delivers significant cost of ownership advantages," he says.
"There is a point at which adding hardware does not keep pace with growing storage needs," explains Le Roux. "VERITAS ServPoint allows companies to take advantage of the shift from direct-attached to networked storage without having to accept any proprietary trade-offs. The scalable, unifying architecture of VERITAS ServPoint serves storage capacity from the workgroup to the enterprise when and where it`s needed," she concludes.
