Leading enterprise-class application storage management software provider, Veritas Software has announced a new version of its Veritas NetBackup product. This latest version redefines enterprise-class application storage management by including enhanced SAN support, non-disruptive database support, automated disaster recovery as well as the next generation of Veritas NetBackup JAVA and Windows NT interfaces.
"Veritas NetBackup set the standard for enterprise data protection nearly a decade ago by being the first storage management product developed as a scalable, multi-tier architecture solution," says Chris Boorman, marketing director for EMEA Veritas Software.
The enhanced Veritas NetBackup Shared Storage Option is the industry`s first heterogeneous SAN-ready storage solution working on both UNIX and Windows NT. Recently shown at Networld+Interop in Las Vegas, this SAN software application dynamically shares individual tape drives, either stand-alone or in a tape library. Customers benefit greatly from its ability to reduce overall costs and provide better hardware utilisation and optimisation of resources during backup and recovery operations.
Adding to the already broad backup offerings for databases, Veritas NetBackup now offers Oracle 8i, MicrosoftSQL Server 7 and IBM DB2 support. These database-aware modules provide technology for the best database-aware protection available today.
The new release also provides the industry`s first integrated disaster recovery feature for Windows NT allowing remote recovery of Windows NT servers without the operating system or data. In addition, enhanced Vault Extension (BP Vault) for NetBackup allows users to fully automate the logistics of offsite media management.
Customers may now set multiple retention periods for duplicate tapes, allowing for greater flexibility of tape vaulting. Additionally, Veritas is the only vendor to provide two types of tape duplication. Tape images can be identical to the original backup or they can be non-interleaved which greatly speeds the recovery process for selective file restores.
The new version of Veritas NetBackup provides enhanced and expanded JAVA and Windows NT interfaces - no longer making it necessary to choose between performance and ease-of-use. The graphical interfaces provide point-and-click operation across all platforms, lowering training costs and centralising administration.
Other significant enhancements to Veritas NetBackup include:
Veritas Global Data Manager - centralises management of enterprise-level Veritas NetBackup for UNIX and Windows NT
EMC TimeFinder - uses EMC`s Symmetrix API to provide data synchronisation and third-mirror break-off support for off-host backup of Oracle data
FlashBackup - further enhancements to allow for increased performance of snapshot backups of file system data
Linux Support -- fully protects popular Linux-based clients
Open File Support on Windows NT - integrated protection of open files at no additional cost
Virus Protection for Windows NT - cleans data prior to the backup to ensure clean data is written to media
