Enterprise-class storage management software vendor, VERITAS Software, has unveiled an initiative to provide a backup and storage management solution for the burgeoning Linux user base.
According to Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager for MEA at VERITAS Software, the development is a natural extension for the Company`s product set. "As an independent software vendor (ISV) it is essential that we deliver what customers want and, with more than 10 million installations worldwide, Linux is creating significant demand."
Citing recent IDC research , Noordwyk says Linux was the fastest growing server operating environment in 1998, having captured more than 17 percent of all server operating system shipments.
"We currently provide backup clients for popular Linux distributions, including Red Hat Linux and SuSE Linux, and have development plans to support Caldera OpenLinux and TurboLinux. With VERITAS Backup Exec and VERITAS NetBackup, Linux servers and workstations are fully protected," says Chris Boorman, marketing director, EMEA, VERITAS Software.

VERITAS Software offers two product lines which each provide Linux support: enterprise-level VERITAS NetBackup for UNIX and Windows NT, and distributed-level VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows NT and NetWare.
VERITAS Backup Exec is a data protection solution for Windows NT installations that require intuitive and reliable data protection with minimal administration. Strengthening Windows NT storage management by expanding its COM-based architecture to deliver a scalable solution, it features Working Set Backup, Integrated Virus Protection, Advanced Device and Media Management (ADAMM), and options such as Intelligent Disaster Recovery and the Shared Storage Option for Fibre Channel SAN environments.
VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare provides advanced features for NetWare 4 and 5, such as the Working Set Backup, advanced barcode reader and media portal support and multi-platform centralised management. Options for Open File protection, Intelligent Disaster Recovery and Advance Device and Media Management (ADAMM) provide a comprehensive solution to the most demanding NetWare environments. The product also fully supports Novell Storage Management Services (SMS), Target Service Agents and Novell Directory Services (NDS).
VERITAS NetBackup currently supports Red Hat Linux with support for SuSE Linux expected this year. It is the industry`s leading enterprise data protection solution that provides centralised control from a single management interface and its multi-tier architecture delivers a fast, reliable, data-center strength backup and recovery solution that protects environments spanning terabytes to petabytes in size.
Key features include integrated Storage Area Network (SAN) support, dynamic tape drive sharing, snapshot backup, server free backup, disaster recovery support and intuitive Java and Windows NT administrative interfaces.
In addition to protecting data in a mixed UNIX, Windows NT and Novell NetWare environment, VERITAS NetBackup provides advanced, "database aware" solutions for all leading databases such as Oracle, DB2, Informix, Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server.
