Veritas Software announces UNIX enterprise-class data protection solution for desktops and mobile laptops

VERITAS Software, the data availability company, has announced a new version of VERITAS NetBackup Professional, which extends its protection of mobile and laptop computers to UNIX-based servers as well as Windows-based servers.

For the desktop and mobile user, VERITAS NetBackup Professional 3.1 runs transparently in the background, automatically protecting business critical data, such as word-processing documents, presentations, e-mail and other crucial information vital to the desktop and mobile laptop user`s everyday tasks. IT administrators benefit from a central console for managing multiple VERITAS NetBackup Professional Servers, whether on Windows or Solaris platforms, and their clients.

"VERITAS NetBackup Professional for Microsoft Windows NT has been well-received in the market since its initial release last year. The next logical step for the product was to introduce a UNIX server component," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional director Middle East and Africa at VERITAS Software. In addition to support for Solaris-based servers, version 3.1 of VERITAS NetBackup Professional introduces features such as Single-Click Backup/Restore, allowing users to back up one file with a single click of the mouse. This benefits mobile workers with a need to protect data in a matter of minutes without initiating a full backup of the machine. With VERITAS NetBackup Professional, administrators can easily schedule, manage and monitor backup and recovery from a central location. Administrators can also prioritise and balance backup workload within an individual server and across multiple servers. For the desktop and mobile user, lost, damaged or stolen data can be quickly restored to its current system or a new desktop or laptop. Desktop and mobile users can access their own backups and schedule additional backups if desired. For mobile laptop users, VERITAS NetBackup Professional automatically backs up and recovers data from remote locations, even when only low speed dialup lines are available.
