VERITAS Software Corporation, The Data Availability Company, and Chaparral Network Storage Inc., a leading provider of intelligent storage networking solutions, together announce the availability of the first part of the VERITAS VERTEX Initiative (see release dated October 24, 2000), which includes the SCSI Extended Copy command that provides server-free backup. This feature is available in VERITAS NetBackup ServerFree Agent, an integral part of the VERITAS NetBackup 4.0V data protection solution.
Chaparral`s FS1310 Intelligent Storage Router enables companies to benefit from the SCSI Extended Copy command - also referred to as XCOPY - a block-oriented command that permits backup data to move from disk directly to tape in large enterprise storage area network (SAN) environments. This highlights the unique feature of high-speed server-free backup - a new off-host backup solution that reduces overhead in production servers and maintains the availability of business-critical data.
"VERITAS NetBackup 4.0V profoundly changes the way companies back up critical data when used in concert with our fibre channel router to provide a robust solution for our mutual customers," said Victor Perez, president and COO of Chaparral Network Storage. "The powerful extended copy engine we built into our router works with VERITAS NetBackup 4.0V to move data with very little impact to the servers or network users. VERITAS Software has succeeded in eliminating a long-term problem associated with backing up production servers, hot databases and mission-critical network servers."
"Chaparral`s implementation of third-party copy is a supreme complement to our VERITAS NetBackup software capabilities which, together, provide users with enhanced flexibility and reliability to protect large enterprise environments," said Neal Ater, senior vice president, Data Protection Group, VERITAS Software. "The VERITAS VERTEX Initiative changes the conventional way of thinking about data protection and offers end users new alternatives to maximize data availability."
The VERITAS VERTEX Initiative is a comprehensive set of data protection solutions that utilizes breakthrough snapshot or frozen image technology to virtually eliminate backup windows and minimize time required for data recovery. Additional software solutions based on the VERTEX initiative will be introduced throughout the year.
