Veritas Software enhances HSM product offering with new version of VERITAS Storage Migrator

Veritas Software Corporation has announced the latest enhancements to its hierarchical storage management (HSM) solutions offering, including versions 3.4 of VERITAS Storage Migrator for UNIX, VERITAS Storage Migrator Remote for UNIX and VERITAS Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT.

Providing enterprise-level storage management for UNIX computing environments, VERITAS Storage Migrator reduces backup and recovery windows by migrating data off critical front-end file servers to secondary storage devices. With version 3.4 of VERITAS Storage Migrator, customers may implement a superior data-migration strategy that offers maximum data availability for business without interruption.

VERITAS Storage Migrator for UNIX

As an easy-to-use file and data management software solution, version 3.4 of VERITAS Storage Migrator for UNIX ensures that only frequently used data is kept permanently online. Inactive data is automatically migrated from online devices to lower-cost secondary storage sources such as optical disk or tape. When accessed by users or applications, the migrated data is quickly and seamlessly retrieved to primary online storage. Increased disk space is now made available for application usage.

With the addition of several new features, version 3.4 of VERITAS Storage Migrator for UNIX offers increased performance and improved usability. Installation and configuration wizards have been added to this release simplifying the implementation process for end-users. Basic configurations can now be set up in four simple steps.

The new file system browser provides end-users with the ability to view and control the status of individual files, offering directory grouping, migration and recall functionality. The introduction of a Job Scheduler to version 3.4 of VERITAS Storage Migrator provides a graphical interface for scheduling activities and eliminates the requirement for command-line scheduling via "cron" jobs. In conjunction, a new Job Monitor is included, allowing administrators to monitor the activity of a given VERITAS Storage Migrator job.

Additionally, the new File System Analyzer (FSA) is an advanced feature in version 3.4 of VERITAS Storage Migrator for UNIX that graphically demonstrates the benefits of storage migration technology by scanning and reporting on the composition of users` file systems.

• Support for Sun Solaris 8 and HP-UX 10.2 and 11

• Enhanced double-buffered I/O - Provides increased performance of recalls and multi-level migrations

• File transfer protocol (FTP) Method enhancements

• Integration with VERITAS NetBackup - Allows for media management component sharing

VERITAS Storage Migrator Remote for UNIX

Using remotely attached storage, VERITAS Storage Migrator Remote for UNIX provides organizations with the ability to deploy a distributed HSM environment utilizing existing storage device capacity.

VERITAS Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT

VERITAS Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT offers Windows NT management to a VERITAS Storage Migrator for UNIX installation. Managing data natively at the Windows NT server, VERITAS Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT migrates data to an FTP (file transfer protocol) Server on the network rather than to tape or optical disk. VERITAS Storage Migrator for UNIX then migrates the Windows NT data to a secondary storage device. Users on the Windows NT side continue to maintain full access to the data.
