VERITAS Software expands hierarchical storage management solutions

VERITAS Software Corporation has announced the new release of VERITAS NetBackup Storage Migrator for Windows 2000 - an offering that provides users with cost-effective solutions to reducing storage overheads and streamlining IT operations.

Coinciding with this release VERITAS has also announced the release of a new version of VERITAS NetBackup Storage Migrator for Microsoft Exchange (version 3.0), an offering with automated capability to migrate and recall seldom-used e-mail attachments to and from less expensive "near-line" or offline storage.

Nick van Noordwyk, regional director, Middle East and Africa at VERITAS Software, believes that proactive storage management has become the key to maximising IT budgets. "Industry analysts cite annual global data growth from 100% to 400% annually. I believe in order to reduce hardware costs, data should be managed carefully."

The NetBackup Storage Migrator utilises HSM techniques to move data to less expensive storage media. This intelligent migration of data makes the most of an IT department`s existing disk storage hardware, reducing the need to add additional equipment.

Says Phil Goodwin, program director, Meta Group: "HSM has been a staple product for mainframe systems for many years. Recently, HSM has gained attention among Unix and Windows users as a method to move infrequently accessed information to lower-cost storage media. This concept can be particularly applicable in data-intensive environments such as medical imaging, geophysical mapping, and pharmaceutical research."

As an enterprise-level solution, NetBackup Storage Migrator provides virtually unlimited online storage capacity to both end users and applications by automating migration and recall of data to offline locations - storage virtualisation. Van Noordwyk says this is accomplished by copying seldom-used files to alternative media and inserting a link in its place so data appears to users and applications as if it were online.

"When the link is accessed, VERITAS NetBackup Storage Migrator retrieves the data from alternate media for the user or application, furthermore the process is transparent to the user and requires no administrator intervention to retrieve data.

"From the start, VERITAS NetBackup Storage Migrator reduces IT costs by shrinking the storage footprint. Using HSM to off-load files decreases the amount of data associated with a primary server - ultimately fewer servers are needed and an IT budget can be salvaged."

A reduced footprint also means backup and disaster recovery is faster and easier because only recent data is backed up. The automated aspect of VERITAS NetBackup Storage Migrator helps trim administrative overhead.
