Veritas Software helps standardise storage networking solutions

By Veritas Software
Johannesburg, 07 Aug 2001

VERITAS Software, the storage software company, and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) today announced that the company has joined the newly formed Storage Networking Industry Association`s Supported Solutions Forum (SSF). As a certified Charter Member of the forum, VERITAS Software will collaborate with other industry leaders to standardise storage networking solutions.

"As a member of the SSF, VERITAS has the opportunity to perform joint support agreements with industry colleagues and to qualify VERITAS solutions within open, heterogeneous storage environments," said Paul Massiglia, SNIA board member and technical director, VERITAS Software. "The qualified solutions are flexible and minimise the complexities of integrating heterogeneous systems."

This newly formed initiative aims to develop multi-vendor storage networking solutions that are jointly qualified and mutually supported. Analysts identify SNIA`s efforts as a significant step towards facilitating the enterprise-wide deployment of storage network solutions.

"Establishing a level of tested and supported interoperability through the SNIA SSF simplifies storage networking implementations," said Bob Passmore, Research Director, Gartner. "In addition, the cooperative support community of SNIA members facilitates joint support and streamlines communication when managing customer service issues. All of these efforts will benefit end-users."

"SNIA`s efforts complement VERITAS Software`s ongoing initiative to form alliances that improve customer support," said Michael Wentz, senior vice president, Worldwide Technical Service, VERITAS Software. "We believe that SNIA-SSF offers an effective way for vendors to collaborate together to solve interoperability issues on a diverse range of products and components. This is a win-win situation for the customer because member companies agree to work together to resolve interoperability issues within complex, real-world storage environments."

The Supported Solutions Forum will promote customer adoption of storage networking solutions by registering configurations that are jointly qualified and supported by SSF members. The Supported Solutions Forum complements the drive to open standards and builds on top of the many interoperability activities underway in the industry by:

* Establishing an industry-wide cooperative support community of SNIA members

* Increasing the functionality and thereby the return on investment that can be achieved by deploying enterprise-class storage network solutions

* Accelerating customer implementation of open and supported storage networking solutions

"We recognise that interoperability can be a primary issue for our customers," said Darwin Jones, VERITAS iLab director, VERITAS Software. "The SSF is a facilitator in uniting companies to address these needs. In conjunction with other industry leaders, VERITAS will develop software and qualify common configurations that render true heterogeneous solutions. Together, with the participation from VERITAS iLab, Engineering and Customer Support, we hope to make the SNIA-SSF a success."
