VERITAS Software Corporation has announced that VERITAS Backup Exec and VERITAS NetBackup provide end-to-end data protection for the SAN-based Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) family.
Working closely with Compaq, VERITAS Software offers a scalable family of backup solutions that has been fully tested and integrated to work seamlessly with all three Compaq EBS Solutions: EBS for Workgroups; EBS for Departments and EBS for the Data Centre.
VERITAS Backup Exec is now included in the Compaq EBS for Workgroups (EBS BackPaq) and supported in the EBS for Departments. Additionally, in delivering on its end-to-end data protection strategy, VERITAS Software also announces that its enterprise-class VERITAS NetBackup is supported in the EBS for the Data
Centre.
"A benefit of our long-standing partnership with VERITAS Software is the ability to work closely to deliver a full breadth of integrated, high-performing, end-to-end storage solutions," says Darren Thomas, vice president, Multi-Vendor Storage, Storage Products Division, Compaq Computer Corporation.
"Together with partners such as VERITAS Software, Compaq addresses the enterprise backup needs of workgroups, departments and data centres by delivering scalable, flexible and cost-effective backup solutions."
VERITAS Backup Exec included in the EBS BackPaq
As part of the extended strategic agreement between the two Companies, Compaq has selected VERITAS Backup Exec and VERITAS Backup Exec Shared Storage Option as the first solution to be included as a component of the Compaq EBS BackPaq solution world-wide. EBS BackPaq includes five single-server licenses of VERITAS Backup Exec and five licenses of VERITAS Backup Exec Shared Storage Option (SSO).
VERITAS Backup Exec SSO is the first solution that allows Windows NT and Novell NetWare servers to work together or independently on the same Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL). Without this functionality, users would need to have separate Fibre Channel solutions for Windows NT and NetWare servers, doubling the cost of hardware. Now, by consolidating backup on the same FC-AL, customers
can maximise their investments on hardware, such as tape drives and tape libraries. EBS BackPaq is designed to provide SAN backup solutions to Windows NT and NetWare customers.
Jointly developed and tested by VERITAS Software and Compaq, EBS BackPaq is the first Fibre Channel backup and restore solution to offer automation, high performance, scalability and complete software functionality at a price comparable to individual DLT 35/70 drives paired one-to-one with individual servers. By driving the cost out of the solution and offering these added benefits, VERITAS Software and Compaq expect to accelerate Fibre Channel backup, and restore acceptance in the Windows NT and NetWare markets. EBS BackPaq has been tailored and well-tuned for up to five Compaq ProLiant servers and ensures absolute integration and maximum performance.
VERITAS Backup Exec supported in the EBS for Departments
In addition to being included in the EBS BackPaq solution, VERITAS Backup Exec and VERITAS Backup Exec Shared Storage Option (SSO) are also supported in the Compaq EBS for Departments configuration. VERITAS Software`s award-winning VERITAS Backup Exec product line supports Compaq`s new Fibre Channel Tape Controller -II and cascaded Hub 12s, offering bulletproof data protection for up to 20 Windows NT and/or Novell NetWare Compaq ProLiant servers.
With the many available options, users may customize the backup solution to meet their data protection needs now and in the future. The VERITAS Backup Exec SSO, supported in the EBS for Departments configuration, breaks new ground in manageability and performance for large-scale, high-end storage environments. The VERITAS Backup Exec SSO allows multiple distributed backup servers to share common, centralized storage devices that are connected over a Fibre Channel storage network for greater efficiency and fault tolerance.
VERITAS NetBackup supported in the EBS for the Data Centre
Today, Compaq`s EBS for the Data Centre, with VERITAS NetBackup and VERITAS NetBackup Shared Storage Option (SSO), enables any combination of multiple Microsoft Windows NT, Tru64(tm)UNIX(r) and Sun Solaris(tm) servers, attached to a Fibre Channel switch, to share a Compaq tape library. VERITAS NetBackup was designed to handle the vast amount of data in the new data centre. Once the sole domain of mainframes, the new data centres are built around large UNIX servers and Windows NT clusters where organizations run their business-critical applications. VERITAS NetBackup provides a four-tier architecture that, combined with advanced media management and pure speed, can address the largest data centre installations. With the support of Compaq`s EBS for the Data Centre, VERITAS Software is emphasizing its ability to provide end-to-end storage management solutions
"Compaq is reforming enterprise storage by segmenting its backup solutions into three business-critical markets: the workgroups, departments and data centres," says Steve Colman, vice president of worldwide OEM operations, VERITAS Software. "VERITAS Software offers solutions that address the needs of each of those markets and continues to work toward developing products that allow for maximum performance within a Fibre Channel environment."
