VERITAS Software ships more than 4,000 SAN licences since 1998, demonstrating market leadership in SAN applications

VERITAS Software has announced that it has shipped more than 4,000 Storage Area Network (SAN) backup licences to customers since the 1998 introduction of the Shared Storage Option for VERITAS Software`s backup products. These SAN products allow companies to increase storage and data protection efficiency by dynamically sharing backup tape drives among multiple servers.

VERITAS Software is releasing its installation figures for VERITAS NetBackup and VERITAS Backup Exec Shared Storage Option to demonstrate the Company`s proven track record in the fast-growing field of SAN technology. SAN applications exploit the growing Fibre Channel SAN hardware infrastructure to help companies better manage their ever-increasing volumes of storage.

VERITAS NetBackup Shared Storage Option addresses the needs of high-performance, heterogeneous enterprise networks by allowing individual tape drives to be shared among multiple VERITAS NetBackup servers across a Fibre Channel SAN, reducing network traffic, peripheral costs and backup time. VERITAS Backup Exec Shared Storage Option delivers a similar "LAN-free" backup solution for workgroup environments running Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Novell Netware.

To expedite the delivery of SANs to end users, VERITAS Software is performing interoperability testing with more than 20 Fibre Channel and storage vendors through the VERITAS SAN Integration Lab. VERITAS Software is also developing the next generation of SAN applications by leveraging technology created through the VERITAS V3 SAN Initiative, a technology initiative aimed at developing non-proprietary products for the SAN environment. A set of SAN virtualisation technologies created through this initiative simplifies the management of heterogeneous SAN installations.
