VERITAS Software solutions earn validation from Oracle storage compatibility program

Veritas Software Corporation has announced that three of its key solutions, which provide disaster recovery, online storage management and data protection for Oracle databases, have completed Oracle`s validation testing for the Oracle Storage Compatibility Program (OSCP). VERITAS Volume Replicator, and VERITAS Software`s unique Storage Checkpoint technology, which enhances database availability in VERITAS Database Edition for Oracle, and VERITAS NetBackup for Oracle, have received validation. The testing program denotes that VERITAS Software is compatible with Oracle servers and the company`s data availability solutions.

The VERITAS Software products and technology verified by the program provide key data availability and storage management tools to organisations operating Oracle databases. VERITAS Volume Replicator provides the basis for a disaster-recovery program by replicating data to remote locations.

VERITAS Database Edition`s Storage Checkpoint technology enables immediate "point-in-time" recovery of data from on-disk snapshot files rather than offline storage. VERITAS NetBackup`s Block Level Incremental Backup technology extends this Storage Checkpoint technology for offline, media-based VERITAS NetBackup data protection, eliminating Oracle backup and recovery windows.

In response to the increasing demand for storage with new and complex storage technologies, Oracle introduced the Oracle Storage Compatibility Program. The program aims to provide enterprise Oracle customers with robust, easy-to-use storage solutions from third-party vendors that are congruent with Oracle databases.

Currently, the Oracle Storage Compatibility Program includes validation in the following areas: Network File Servers, Remote Mirroring Technologies and Snapshot Technologies.

Scalable Data Availability Solutions

VERITAS NetBackup for Oracle - Advanced BLI Agent is a software-centric, snapshot backup solution that backs up only the modified data blocks at the block level, all at a fraction of the cost of split-mirror hardware solutions. This integrated solution, which combines VERITAS Database Edition for Oracle with VERITAS NetBackup, completed validation testing in the area of Snapshot Technologies. VERITAS NetBackup`s Block-Level Incremental Backup - the first to be validated by Oracle - negates the need to scan the entire database in order to perform incremental backups, greatly reducing elapsed time and resource consumption.

VERITAS Volume Replicator, which was validated in the Remote Mirroring Technologies area, enables disaster recovery solutions over local or wide area networks. Tightly integrated with VERITAS Volume Manager, VERITAS Volume Replicator mirrors data to remote locations over any IP network. Supporting both fully synchronous and asynchronous data replication, the solution enables customers to optimise data currency and performance. Offering system administrators the flexibility to select the storage-array vendor at each site, the solution enables the customer to optimise costs of secondary site equipment. Since secondary copies are kept up-to-date on online storage, the time to restore data availability after a disaster or system outage is dramatically reduced.

VERITAS Database Edition for Oracle`s enhanced Storage Checkpoint technology along with its Storage Rollback feature provide administrators with quick recovery from logical errors such as database corruption, missing files and dropped table spaces. VERITAS Storage Checkpoint, a disk and I/O efficient "snapshot" technology, allows rapid online recovery from logical corruption of Oracle databases. Thus, if a database administrator receives a complaint of a corrupted database, the administrator can quickly mount successive Storage Checkpoints to view the database and determine when the corruption occurred. After finding the corruption, the administrator can perform Storage Rollback to a Storage Checkpoint before the corruption occurred, quickly recovering the database.
