Veritas Software targets ARCServeIT for NetWare market

One of the ways in which Veritas aims to increase its market-share in the backup and restore arena is by converting Computer Associates` ARCServeIT for NetWare installed base to its own complete storage management solution.

Version 8.5 of VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare was released with this intention, allowing customers to seamlessly catalogue, import or restore ARCServeIT tape-based .

"Understanding that a percentage of the market already has ARCServeIT installed, we made the transition away from ARCServeIT to the Veritas solution, a completely seamless process," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional director, Middle East and Africa at VERITAS Software. "Essentially this means users of Computer Associates` products need not convert legacy data on tapes or maintain legacy data restore systems."

VERITAS Backup Exec Intelligent Recovery Option and VERITAS Backup Exec Open File Option, together with VERITAS Backup Exec for NetWare provide quick, point-in-time recovery and protection of in-use data such as GroupWise, on both local and remote NetWare servers.

"The new ARCServeIT tape read capability and the Competitive Migration Suite will enable customers to cost-effectively upgrade to the latest Novell NetWare data protection solution from Veritas," says van Noordwyk.

Backup Exec for NetWare 8.5 is Novell "Yes, tested and Approved" certified to ensure absolute compatibility with all NetWare servers. It introduces what will be new features to its market, such as writing catalogue files to both tape and disk to facilitate quick, instantly ready media access.

Auto job fail-over redirects a failed job to an alternate drive, resulting in a level of fault tolerance and assurance of job completion, while Quick Check provides automated, instant verification that data on the tape is available for restore.

"These are features the current ARCServeIT market has been looking for and, by delivering them in a VERITAS solution specifically designed for the Novell software, we are protecting their investment and offering sorely lacking functionality," says van Noordwyk.

The VERITAS solution aims to improve efficiencies, decrease backup and restore times and accomplish this without disrupting the work of users on the network. "The new Backup Exec for NetWare decreases network traffic through the use of agents, offloads storage traffic from the LAN to increase backup speeds and reduce network traffic, while SSO allows NetWare and NT to share libraries," says van Noordwyk.
