Veritas, St Bernard in nonstop backup agreement

Johannesburg, 05 Aug 1998

Veritas Software, a leading provider of end-to-end storage management software solutions, has entered into a marketing and sales agreement with St Bernard Software. Under the agreement, Veritas will resell a version of St Bernard`s Open File Manager software as part of its complete line of storage management software products. This version is configured for use with Veritas NetBackup.

"By offering Open File Manager alongside Veritas NetBackup, we are expanding our coverage of the desktop Windows NT market and broadening options for our growing NT customer base, as well as simplifying their purchasing process," says David Spenhoff, VP of marketing, Veritas Software. "Customers who rely on Windows NT Server for enterprise computing can purchase the industry-leading backup and recovery solution, with the industry-standard open file backup solution, from one vendor. Many of our customers have been asking for a one-stop-shop solution to simplify the purchase and installation process."

NetBackup for NT Server, when used with Open File Manager, enables NT customers to enjoy the maximum protection of NetBackup storage management, while eliminating the backup window.

Integration of NetBackup with Open File Manager extends the advanced availability and disaster recovery features of NetBackup to all files in enterprise NT networks, enabling "hot" backups of files that are in use (open files) at the time backup processes take place. In combination with the NetBackup ability to perform online backups of Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange Server, Open File Backup helps to deliver 24-hour availability.

"Veritas NetBackup has a significant presence across the global 2000 market," comments Craig Schwartz, VP, marketing and business development for St Bernard. "These customers are increasingly implementing Windows NT and need open file backup to support these environments. The synergies between our products, and the consolidated packaging and support, will make the combination of NetBackup and Open File Manager an excellent choice for customers who want a comprehensive, high availability backup solution."

Open File Manager is a utility that enables existing backup programs, or operating system copy functions, to capture open files - even if the files are changing. It supports numerous storage devices, server hardware platforms and end-user applications, as well as NetWare and the many variants of NT.

With Open File Manager, customers can continue to work uninterrupted, while backup programs are running and capturing open files. This ensures that the critical data will be backed up reliably during normal backup operations and that users will always have access to the most recent version of a file, even after system failure. This streamlines backup and alleviates the problem of end-users losing access to applications when backups are running, or of open files being missed because the backup application must wait until the file is inactive.
